The Story Behind Healthy Seniors
How My Mission to Keep Mom and Dad Healthy Kickstarted a Movement for Better Senior Living.
Hi there! I realized that maybe not everybody knows the story behind this newsletter, so I decided to introduce myself: I’m Diana, the owner of Healthy Seniors. This whole adventure started back in 2017 when my mother was recovering from breast cancer. After going through chemotherapy and radiation, she was struggling to regain her strength and energy. Watching her go through that was tough—it made me realize just how important it is to stay active and healthy, especially as we get older. I knew I had to find a way to help her, and that’s where this journey began.
Aside from my mom’s cancer, I noticed that both my parents were slowing down, exercising less, and facing more health issues. It wasn’t just their physical health that concerned me—it was also about helping them maintain their independence and keep that spark for life alive.
Determined to make a change, I started having long conversations with my physical therapist, looking for ways to keep my parents active and engaged without completely disrupting their daily routines. That’s how the idea for Healthy Seniors came to life. What began as a personal mission quickly grew into something much bigger—something that could help seniors everywhere.
With the help of my physical therapist, I came up with a chair exercise routine using resistance bands that my mom could do right at home. When I couldn’t find anything like it on the market, I took matters into my own hands. We searched for suppliers in China who could help us bring the product to life, and decided to sell it on Amazon so that seniors everywhere could benefit from it.
From there, things grew organically. My dad was always complaining about how hard it was to cut his nails—I didn’t realize at the time that nails get much thicker as you age. So, I took a deep dive into nail clippers and came up with a set that he could actually use. The next product was a hand exercise set with squeeze balls, inspired by my mom’s struggle with arthritis. Each new product was born out of a real need in my own family.
I quickly realized that products alone weren’t enough—I needed information, too. I found myself researching everything from how to make the stairs safer for my parents to strategies for keeping them motivated to stay active. It became clear that knowledge was just as crucial as the tools themselves. I was constantly learning, figuring out the best ways to support them, and discovering that there’s a lot more to healthy aging than meets the eye.
Now, let’s keep it real for a second. My parents and father-in-law are 78, and let’s just say, the road hasn’t always been smooth. Last year, my dad needed an emergency triple bypass surgery. On top of that, I watched both my grandmothers fall inside the house and never recover—one passed away a few months later, and the other was bedridden for four years before she passed. We also lost my mother-in-law in 2020. I’m not naive; I know things are slowly degrading. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do something about it. I’m grateful that my parents are still enjoying time with their grandkids, and I’m on a mission to keep them active and involved for as long as possible. Because let’s face it, nobody wants to sit on the sidelines. And while I’m at it, I’m also thinking about my own future. I’ve got big plans to hit 100, travel the world, and live life to the fullest—and I’m dragging my husband along for the ride!
The more I dug into how to keep my parents healthy, the more I realized how much information is out there—and how scattered and confusing it can be. I’ve spent countless hours gathering the best tips, tricks, and advice to help seniors stay active and maintain their independence. That’s the real reason behind starting this newsletter. I want to share what I’ve learned with you, so you don’t have to go down the same rabbit holes I did.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering—yes, we still sell the products I told you about (they’re available on Amazon if you’re interested). But Healthy Seniors is really about more than just products. It’s about a community, about sharing knowledge, and about making sure our loved ones can enjoy their golden years with as much fun, freedom, and flair as possible.
So, if you’re here because you care about keeping your parents, grandparents, or even yourself healthy and active, welcome to the club! Let’s navigate this aging thing together, with a bit of humor, a lot of heart, and maybe even a few dance moves (trust me, it’s good exercise).
